Aluminium smelter Qatalum has achieved ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard Certification for primary aluminium smelting and the manufacturing of foundry alloys and extrusion ingots.
The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative aims to see sustainability and human rights principles increasingly embedded in the aluminium value chain and works toward more responsible production, sourcing, and stewardship.
“Qatalum is proud to have achieved ASI Certification. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance is essential to doing business today and we are pleased to be able to offer ASI certified aluminium products, which provides our customers and stakeholders the assurance of a globally recognized standard,” says Khalid Mohamed Laram, chief executive officer of Qatalum
The ASI Performance Standard defines ESG principles and criteria. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, indigenous people’s rights, and greenhouse gas emissions. The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a CoC for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors.
“ASI congratulates Qatalum for achieving Performance Standard and CoC Standard Certifications. As the first dual ASI certified company in Qatar, Qatalum is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability issues in a region where primary aluminium production has tripled in the last 10 years. ASI’s program provides a platform and pathway for continuous improvement and we look forward to Qatalum’s ongoing sustainability journey,” says Fiona Solomon, chief executive officer of ASI.
Qatalum is a primary aluminum plant in Qatar and a joint venture between Hydro and Qatar Aluminium Manufacturing Company (QAMCO). Hydro holds 50 percent of the shares in Qatalum.
The plant has a current nameplate capacity of primary aluminium of 636,000 metric tonnes and casthouse capacity of 664,000 metric tonnes. The Mesaieed-based site is fully integrated with a smelter, casthouse, carbon plant and a dedicated gas-fired power plant.
The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organization. It works toward responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium following an entire value chain approach. To this end, ASI launched its Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard in December 2017, and after a three year revision process, published new versions of the Standards in May 2022.
