Hydro to increase production of post-consumer recycled aluminium
Skip to content

Hydro’s Primary Metal business area launched Hydro 75R in December 2017. Delivered as extrusion ingot, the product offers a minimum of 75 percent post-consumer recycled aluminium – metal that has been used in other products. Hydro’s aim with the product is to increase the use of recycled post-consumer aluminium in extrusions.

The content of Hydro 75R is verified by DNV GL, based on traceability and quality principles developed by Hydro.

The certified low-carbon aluminium is only produced today at Hydro’s Clervaux plant in Luxembourg.

Hilde Merete Aasheim, executive vice president in charge of Hydro Primary Metal, says the expansion in Azuqueca will enable the company to offer an additional 25,000 tonnes of Hydro 75R as of 2020. “We believe this product fills a need in the market,” she says.

Filling a market need with at least 75 percent recycled content, guaranteed

Last month, Hydro Primary Metal and the downstream business area Hydro Extruded Solutions signed an agreement in which Extruded Solutions will purchase the entire 2019 volume of Hydro 75R for use in its aluminium building systems. Primary Metal will continue to offer test orders of Hydro 75R to other customers.

“Our customers are looking for more sustainable materials for their product and system solutions, and Hydro 75R is a certified product that helps them meet their own climate strategies,” says Egil Hogna, executive vice president responsible for Hydro Extruded Solutions.

“With Hydro 75R, we can now offer them the greenest aluminium in the world – guaranteed.”

Hydro 75R in Wicona, Technal branded aluminium building systems

Hogna says his aluminium building systems organization will make use of the Hydro 75R-branded aluminium as a unique selling point in the market. Hydro’s Wicona brand has already begun marketing its WICLINE 75 MAX window profile, while the Technal brand plans to bring Hydro 75R into its product range next year.

“This product goes to the core of our industry’s sustainability challenge. With Hydro 75R, we meet the global demand for aluminium with metal that’s produced with the lowest carbon footprint compared to competing building materials,” he says.

Advanced scrap sorting technology

Hydro’s advanced scrap sorting technology makes it possible for the company to offer prime-quality aluminium with the most recycled content available in the market.

Two Hydro plants work together to produce Hydro 75R extrusion ingots. Scrap shredding and sorting takes place at a dedicated facility in Dormagen, Germany. The plant then sends the metal to the remelting plant in Clervaux, where Hydro 75R is produced.
