The same sites received the ASI Performance Standard certificate in March, 2019. The Chain of Custody Standard means that not only the sites and their practices are certified, but the physical metal they process too, when obtained from ASI certified sources.
The ASI Chain of Custody Standard is voluntary for ASI members, though it is recommended as a way to add value to certification against the Performance Standard.
“We are happy and proud to be certified against the Chain of Custody Standards by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, which enable us to offer certified aluminium to our customers”, says Einar Glomnes, Executive Vice President of Rolled Products.
Sustainability milestone
“This is an important milestone for Hydro on our ambitious sustainability agenda, and in our strategy to help our customers document that they offer aluminium products that are sourced and produced responsibly throughout the entire value-chain”, Glomnes adds.
“In the past months, Hydro has shown determined leadership in its efforts to achieve ASI Certification for its operations. The ability to offer their customers ASI certified aluminium having achieved CoC certification is another great milestone”, says Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI.
Besides the rolling and finishing operations, the certification includes smelting, re-melting, and casting operations. The independent, third-party audits of the Rolled Products operations were carried out by DNV GL.
Through its Rolled Products business area, Hydro is one of the world´s leading manufacturer of technically advanced rolled aluminium solutions, producing among others applications for the automotive and packaging industry as well as the print and building & construction sector.
ASI Certification process
The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organization. It works toward responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium following an entire value chain approach. ASI’s Standards apply throughout the supply chain, from mining through to downstream sectors that use aluminium in their products. ASI launched its Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard in December 2017.
