Primary Metal in Hydro achieves ASI certification
Skip to content

Hydro’s primary aluminium plants in Høyanger, Årdal, Karmøy and Sunndal in Norway and the remelter and casthouse Clervaux in Luxembourg have been successfully certified according to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s (ASI) Performance Standard.

With the certification of the Primary Aluminium business area, Hydro extends its certified operations to 13 production sites, from primary metal, smelting/re-melting and casting through to extruding and rolling, and now has the most ASI Performance Standard certified operations of the ASI membership.

The ASI Certification program is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. The independent, third-party audits of the Primary Metal operations were carried out by DNV GL.

“We see a strategic fit between our sustainability agenda and our commercial agenda, and the ASI certification as an important step on the way,” says Pål Kildemo.

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative arranges its Annual General Meeting in Molde, Norway in the first week of June. Hydro looks very much forward to hosting a tour for the participants at the now ASI Performance Standard certified Sunndal primary aluminium plant during this annual meeting of the ASI members.

ASI Certification process

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organization. It works toward responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium following an entire value chain approach. ASI’s Standards apply throughout the supply chain, from mining through to downstream sectors that use aluminium in their products. ASI launched its Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard in December 2017.
