About Hydro Energy

We are responsible for developing new business opportunities for Hydro within both renewable energy, hydrogen and batteries, and we provide support to the rest of Hydro’s business areas on contracts, security of supply and energy framework conditions.

Power Operations is responsible for our physical operations, including our hydropower portfolio in Norway, and the wind farm operations at Tonstad, Norway. We are operators of 40 power plants in Norway, with a combined output of 13.7 TWh renewable electricity in a normal year, close to 10 percent of the production in Norway.

Energy Markets is a significant market player in the Nordics and Brazil, optimizing our power portfolios in the markets from day to day.

Our Projects unit develops and executes projects across the company, with broad engineering expertise and experience from large industrial projects.

New opportunities in the energy transition

In addition to our Operations, Markets and Projects portfolio, we are also active developers of business opportunities within renewable power, hydrogen and batteries, where our capabilities match megatrends.

The Batteries business unit in Hydro Energy develops current assets and explores additional business opportunities within the battery value chain.

Hydro Rein offers renewable energy solutions for more sustainable industries. Set up as a separate company, Hydro Rein facilitates access to affordable renewable power, sourced from our portfolio of hydro, solar and wind projects in Brazil and the Nordics. We also provide industrial scale solutions to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and cut costs.

Hydro Havrand, a fully-owned Hydro company, offers green hydrogen made from renewable energy and industrial fuel switch solutions to help bring the world to net-zero emissions. We will develop, operate and own green hydrogen facilities, and provide our expertise to customers within heavy industries, maritime sector and heavy transport to enable them to transition to renewable energy. These sectors add up to almost 30 per cent of global CO2 emissions, but with green hydrogen we can change that. We can convert zero-emission, renewable energy into hydrogen for input in industrial processes and also as fuel for shipping and trucking.

Energy used in aluminium production

Because it takes a lot of energy to produce primary aluminium, it is very important to use energy sources that leave a small carbon footprint. An aluminium plant which bases its electricity on coal leaves a CO2 footprint five times larger than one that bases its production on electricity from renewable sources.

Hydro’s primary aluminium production capacity in Norway is 100 percent supplied with renewable power. World-wide, Hydro’s corresponding renewable power share is above 70 percent. By the end of 2018, Hydro was the fourth largest buyer of renewable power in the world and the largest in Europe.

The low carbon footprint of Hydro’s aluminium is a unique competitive advantage, and it is in large enabled by efficient technology and emission-free power in the aluminium production process.
