Hydro expands remelt capacity in Sjunnen, Sweden

With the planned expansion of the casthouse, aluminium recycling capacity in Sjunnen will increase from 42,000 tonnes to 62,000 tonnes per year.

The decision to expand the aluminium casthouse operations in Sjunnen comes in response to an increased market demand for low-carbon aluminium profiles across all industries where Hydro Extrusions operates.

Furthermore, the location in the south of Sweden is ideal to capture available used aluminium metal from local industries which otherwise would have had to be transported long distances, increasing cost and carbon footprint of the final product.

“By using more process scrap and end-of-life aluminium from local industries and our own extrusion plants in Vetlanda and Finspång, we can supply more low-carbon aluminium to the local market. The recycling casthouses have an important role to fill in the transition toward a greener economy,” says Jonas Bjuhr, Managing Director Hydro Extrusions Sweden.

Hydro has a set an overall target of reducing its carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 and increasing capacity for recycling aluminium and producing more low-carbon aluminium products plays an important role in realizing this target. The expansion will allow the Sjunnen plant to increase production of the Hydro range of low-carbon alloys like Hydro RESTORE and Hydro REDUXA

Hydro Extrusions Sweden recently announced a re-start of the extrusion plant in Sjunnen to meet the increased demand for sustainable aluminium profiles.
